The La Clase Mágica curriculum focuses on four over-arching skills that we believe build successful learners.
(rollover the images to learn more about each skill):
We strive to create curriculum that meets the needs of participants, as well as reflects and enhances their understanding of the world. This means that activities are structured to build off of the children's current knowledge. We call each child's rich resource of cultural knowledge their "fund of knowledge" and we encourage the undergrads to enter their world by understanding and learning from these "funds". By incorporating culturally relevant language, icons, songs, and phrases into the activities, our undergrads are better able to connect with the child's world and help them add to their knowledge.
Voice and Identity
Our participants look at how they can share their personal voice within the projects they engage in at site. By voice we mean their past knowledge, cultural background, and personal stories that create their identity. Part of the magic of LCM is letting children discover their personal identity through various culturally relevant activities, as well as life skills learning that reflect on their daily lives. Children are able to imagine themselves at their optimum, and express their world and dreams in new ways.
