Below is a short excerpt written by Eduardo Silva a student from La Clase Mágica in La Universidad Juarez Autonoma de Tabasco, Mexico. During the month of August Eduardo visited two LCM sites which included LCM at UCSD and LCM at Whittier
When I heard about La Clase Mágica for the first time, I thought it was a kind of class where magic was implemented truly. It’s not a joke, I instantly imagined a fantasy world with lots of strategies and tricks that helped people learn faster, a world where magicians did their shows and stuff. To my surprise, magic in La Clase Mágica is not implemented in the way I thought it was. However, I was not completely wrong about the magic that existed in La Clase Mágica because in fact magic did exists in here; this magic is translated into a great educational effort in order to help children learn and develop new skills through games in a bilingual community of learners; that is what I discovered when I started to read about LCM.
At the beginning, I was a little confused about what LCM was all about, and that idea was reinforced when I met Professor Olga Vásquez, since she herself said that LCM is complex to understand, and that made me think a lot. The complexity behind LCM turned out to be a key component to my journey to learning more about the positive impact LCM has done.
As a result of my desire to further my knowledge about LCM I decided to travel to San Diego, California in order to learn more about LCM and see how it works in its land. Unfortunately, I was not able to see how the sites operate during the program period, but I did have the opportunity to learn about the core of how LCM functions. through this experience I had the opportunity to meet a variety of great people. It was one of the most beautiful experiences I have ever had. These people made me feel the magic of La Clase Mágica, since one of their values is, to ma but I would say that is to make everyone feel comfortable.
But talking about academic experiences, I am pleased to say that I was able to understand in a clearer way what LCM is about and how important it is to research and be aware of the things that happen in our context, since context is one of the most valuables things when conducting qualitative research and work with other people. I mention this specifically because I found that LCM is not only an after school program, but a space where you can do research in order to expand your knowledge, find new research topics, and a space where you learn to make better decisions
As someone that explored LCM for the last month, I can say a lot of things about LCM, like it is an educative program where children can go and learn new things through the game and bilingual activities, it is a space always trying to innovate new educational proposals, a place where children and adults can feel comfortable with themselves and other, a non-hierarchical place where everybody is able to learn new things and discover a new world besides the real world.
