"Participating in La Clase Mágica for two quarters has undoubtedly been the highlight of my time at UCSD thus far. I was skeptical at first that any substantive research could be accomplished in a quarter, but I was surprised to see how much I did get done. Despite being perhaps the last person you would expect to succeed, as a male, first-year, cognitive science student with a strong STEM background, I found myself enjoying and greatly appreciating the work, and look forward to continuing it throughout my time at UCSD.
It was also just a lot of fun. It’s always a blast to arrive on sight and be greeted with a swarm of hugs and greetings. You can see that you get to make a positive impact on the life of these kids. This isn’t like other classes where you simply learn in the classroom. This is a class where you go out and apply what you know. It’s a refreshing change of pace to know that what you’re learning actually has real life applications beyond the class. Even though the readings and theory can get heavy at times, it’s all worth doing.
The skills I gained through LCM have been incredibly useful. I’ve learned how to conduct proper research as well as apply theoretical frameworks when developing my own concepts. I took this class multiple times to flesh out the research I was doing, and I look forward to continuing it. Doing actual research is very fulfilling, and that’s what makes this class so unique."
